REDLANDS, Calif. — Redlands City Council voted unanimously on June 17 to approve a $142,990 contract with RRM Design Group to develop a collection of pre-approved accessory dwelling unit (ADU) design plans.
Why it matters: The initiative is part of Redlands’ push to expand housing options, particularly for lower- and middle-income residents. By removing financial and bureaucratic barriers, the city hopes to see an increase in ADU construction in the coming years.
Details: The approved plans will include at least four architectural styles, including Craftsman, California Ranch, Contemporary and Mid-Century Modern along with three distinct floor plans ranging from compact studios to two-bedroom units. Each design will comply with city development standards and the California Residential Code.
Once finalized, the permit-ready designs will be available at no cost to homeowners and applicants, reducing both the expense and complexity of building an ADU. City staff said the plans will be promoted through brochures, social media and the city website to maximize public awareness.
What they’re saying: “This will help facilitate additional ADU’s in Redlands,” said City Planning Manager Brian Foote. “We’re averaging about 15 accessory dwelling unit permits annually. It’s not a lot, it's better than zero, but it's not a lot, and we think we can do a lot better by helping facilitate production of more affordable housing and ADU’s in particular.”
Zoom out: ADU standard plans are increasingly used by cities across California as a strategy to meet state-mandated housing goals. RRM Design Group has completed similar projects for cities like Coachella, Jurupa Valley, Claremont and San Luis Obispo.
Moving forward: The agreement is set to run through December 31, 2025.
