Redlands Voters Cast Ballots in June Primary; Hilton and Becerra Lead Crowded Governor's Race
Here's a look at early election results Tuesday night.
Early returns show incumbent Mayor Helen Tran with a commanding lead
SAN BERNARDINO — Residents cast ballots Tuesday in four city races during the June 2 statewide primary, with the mayor's office and three City Council seats on the ballot.
Early returns show incumbent Mayor Helen Tran with a commanding lead, pulling 56 percent of the vote in initial mail ballot results against five challengers. Among them is former Mayor John Valdivia, who is attempting a comeback after his 2022 defeat. Valdivia's previous tenure ended in controversy following a formal censure over misuse of public funds and city resources.
In the three City Council races, early mail ballots show Virginia Marquez leading in Ward 1, Christian Shaughnessy ahead in Ward 2, and incumbent Fred Shorett in front in Ward 4 with challenger Joe Salas close behind.
Under California's top-two primary system, a candidate who earns an outright majority advances directly to victory. If no candidate clears 50 percent, the top two vote-getters advance to the Nov. 3 general election. Tran's early margin suggests she could win outright, though results will shift significantly as polling place ballots are counted.
Results are updated as San Bernardino County Registrar reports. Polls closed at 8 p.m.
