Here's a look at early election results Tuesday night.
Here's a look at early election results Tuesday night.
Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra appear headed for a November showdown in the race for California governor, with both candidates leading a crowded primary field as votes continued to be counted Tuesday night.
With 71.5 percent of precincts reporting statewide, Hilton led with 26.8 percent to Becerra's 25.8 percent. Democrat Tom Steyer trailed at 19.7 percent, close enough to remain in the conversation but facing a narrowing path to the top two. Under California's top-two primary system, the two highest vote-getters advance to the November general election regardless of party affiliation.
Two congressional districts covering the Redlands area were also on Tuesday's ballot.
In California's 23rd Congressional District, Republican incumbent Jay Obernolte held a dominant lead with 56 percent of the vote with 15.7 percent of precincts reporting. Democrat Tessa Lynn Hodge ran second at 20 percent, with Democrat Pat Wallis close behind at 15.5 percent.
In the 33rd Congressional District, Democratic incumbent Pete Aguilar led with 52.9 percent with nearly half of precincts reporting. Republican Stephanie Vargas held second place at 18.8 percent, followed by Republican Tom Herman at 12 percent.
In the three state Assembly districts that cover Redlands, early results showed incumbents and established candidates building comfortable leads.
In Assembly District 45, which covers north Redlands, incumbent Democratic Assemblymember James Ramos led Republican Greg Abdouch 63 to 37 percent with 44 percent of precincts reporting. In Assembly District 47, covering south Redlands, Republican Greg Wallis led with 61.5 percent, with Democrats Leila Namvar and Jason Byors splitting the remaining vote. Namvar held second place at 22.6 percent. In Assembly District 50, covering central and east Redlands, Democrat Robert Garcia led Republican Victoria Viveros Mageno 55.8 to 41.2 percent with 42 percent of precincts in.
All three races are primaries, with the top two vote-getters advancing to November.
The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools race drew four candidates and appears to be headed to November. With about a quarter of precincts reporting, Cali Binks led with 38.2 percent, followed by Alejandro "Alex" Vara at 29.3 percent. Ken Larson and Ray Anthony Culberson trailed, combining for about 32 percent of the vote. No candidate appeared on pace to win an outright majority, meaning the top two will advance to the November runoff.
Incumbent San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus held a commanding lead over challenger Joe Silva, 66.7 to 33.2 percent. Ryan Hutchison led Ensen Mason 55.8 to 44.2 percent in the Auditor-Controller race.
