Fire has grown to 27,974 acres and is 5% contained
REDLANDS, Calif. – Redlands Unified School District (RUSD) will remain closed for the rest of the week due to ongoing risks from the Line Fire, Superintendent Juan Cabral announced Tuesday.
The closure affects all RUSD schools, students, and employees through Sept. 13. All activities and athletics are also suspended until further notice.
"Your safety is our utmost priority, and every decision we've made this week has been with your well-being in mind," Cabral said in a statement to families and staff.
Cabral's announcement noted that despite hopes to resume classes Wednesday, many of the District's families and staff face potential evacuation orders. The unpredictable weather patterns have also complicated the situation.
Cabral acknowledged the challenges the extended closure may create for families but emphasized the need for safety.
The district plans to reopen schools on Monday, Sept. 16, barring any changes in the fire situation.
RUSD officials will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
The Line fire in San Bernardino County has grown to 27,974 acres with only 5% containment on Tuesday afternoon. The fire is threatening 65,600 structures, including homes, businesses, and other structures.
On Monday, Gov. Gavin Newsom activated the California National Guard to support firefighting efforts against the rapidly spreading wildfire.
