At Caravel Health in Redlands, Dr. Landen Green is rewriting what it means to be a primary care physician—and patients are taking notice.
“Patients are starving for the type of healthcare I am able to provide through Direct Primary Care,” said Dr. Green, founder of Caravel Health. “And the community has swarmed in support.”
Caravel Health was born out of frustration with the traditional healthcare system: rushed visits, excessive paperwork and administrative hurdles that left both doctors and patients dissatisfied.
Dr. Green, who spent years practicing in that system, said it became clear he couldn’t be the kind of doctor his patients needed him to be.
“In the traditional system, I wasn’t able to be the doctor my patients needed,” Dr. Green said. “They needed a doctor who could listen, explain their conditions, answer their questions and genuinely care about them. That’s incredibly difficult to do in the typical system.”
When asked what gap in healthcare he was trying to fill, Dr. Green replied, “I think it'd be easier to answer what gap I wasn't hoping to fill!”
By stepping away from insurance-driven constraints and launching a direct primary care practice, Dr. Green created a model that emphasizes access, affordability and authentic relationships.
Under Caravel Health’s membership model, patients pay $129 a month for unlimited visits, direct access by phone or text, and transparent pricing for medications and labs.
That means no copays, no visit fees, included procedures (stitches, mole removals) and tests (urinalysis, flu), plus annual blood panels for less than $50. There’s no waiting room, appointments are available same- or next-day when needed, and patients always see the same doctor.
“For less than a cup of coffee per day, members get access to care that is convenient, transparent and personal,” Dr. Green said.
Caravel Health also offers virtual visits and text-based consults when appropriate, though Dr. Green says he always prefers in-person care when possible.
“Most of the time, patients come in and head straight back to the exam room—there’s no sitting around with a clipboard,” he said.
The most rewarding part? “Every time I get a sincere ‘thank you,’ I know I’m where I need to be,” Green said. “Text messages like, ‘I’m so thankful I found you’ confirm I’m on the right path.”
At the same time, he regularly hears stories from patients frustrated with the care they received elsewhere. Some waited months to see a primary care provider, only to have appointments canceled multiple times. Others faced surprise bills, inaccessible doctors or confusing insurance charges.
“One patient from Redlands told me their assigned PCP was in San Francisco,” he said. “When they called to correct it, the insurance company confirmed it was accurate.”
Those frustrations fuel Caravel’s mission to deliver care that is timely, clear and compassionate.
“Trying and failing would have been more of a success than never trying and being stuck with regret,” Dr. Green said. “But almost three years later, I’m proud to say—this works.”
