The NWS cites a particularly dangerous combination of gusty winds, low humidity, and critically dry conditions across the Inland Empire and San Bernardino County mountains.
REDLANDS, Calif. — Residents in Redlands and surrounding areas are being urged to prepare for severe weather conditions as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued both a high wind warning and a Red Flag Warning for the area.
Why it matters: These warnings cover the Inland Empire and San Bernardino County mountains, with strong Santa Ana winds and low humidity creating dangerous outdoor conditions and a heightened risk of wildfires from Tuesday through Thursday.
Details: The high wind warning is in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday. Forecasts predict north winds of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts of up to 70 mph in the Inland Empire. Isolated gusts could reach 80 mph near and below the Cajon Pass.
The San Bernardino mountains, particularly on the coastal slopes, could experience severe conditions, with damaging winds expected to topple trees, down power lines, and create widespread power outages. Travel may be hazardous, especially for high-profile vehicles.
In addition, a red flag warning is in effect from 1 PM Tuesday through 6 PM Thursday. This alert highlights the critical combination of strong winds and low relative humidity, which is expected to drop to 10–15% on Wednesday with a poor recovery overnight. Humidity will remain critically low into Thursday, with a minimum of 10–15%.
The red flag warning encompasses the San Bernardino County mountains, the Inland Empire, Santa Ana mountains, Inland Orange County, San Diego valleys, and San Diego and Riverside County mountains.
The NWS warns that these conditions could result in rapid wildfire spread and dangerous fire behavior, posing risks to life and property.
