Binks, Vara advance in San Bernardino County schools race

REDLANDS, Calif. — Voters narrowed the field in San Bernardino County's race for superintendent of schools Tuesday, setting up a November showdown between educator Cali Binks and educator Alex Vara, according to unofficial final election results.
Binks led the four-candidate field with 37.4% of the vote, while Vara secured the second spot with 29.8%. Because neither candidate received a majority, both will advance to the general election.
In the nonpartisan race for California superintendent of public instruction, Chino Valley Unified school board President Sonja Shaw received 24.9% of the vote, while San Diego Unified school board Trustee Richard Barrera earned 18.9%. The two candidates will advance to the November general election.
In November, two Redlands Unified school board seats are also up for election.
In other county races, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus won reelection outright with 65.6% of the vote, defeating challenger Joe Silva.
Rancho Cucamonga City Council member Ryan Hutchison won election as county auditor-controller with 56.9% of the vote, avoiding a November election. Incumbent Ensen Mason’s received 43%.
Assembly District 47, which includes south Redlands, will feature a November matchup between incumbent Republican Greg Wallis and Democrat Leila Namvar. Wallis led the primary field with 49.5%, while Namvar received 29.5%. Democrat Jason Byors finished third with 21%.
In Assembly District 50, which includes portions of central and east Redlands, incumbent Democrat Robert Garcia led with 54.5% of the vote and will advance to November along with Republican Victoria Viveros Mageno, who received 42.3%.
Both candidates running in Assembly District 45, which includes north Redlands, will face off during the November election. Incumbent Assemblymember James C. Ramos received 62% of the vote; challenger Greg Abdouch received 37.9%.
In the 23rd Congressional District, incumbent Rep. Jay Obernolte received 58.6% of the vote, while Democrat Tessa Lynn Hodge secured the second-place finish with 18.7%, advancing both candidates to the November election.
In the 33rd Congressional District, incumbent Rep. Pete Aguilar led the field with 51.7% of the vote and will face Republican Stephanie M. Vargas, who finished second with 19.2%, in November.
