Checkpoint will run from 6 p.m. to midnight June 19 at an undisclosed location as part of ongoing impaired driving enforcement efforts.
REDLANDS, Calif. — The Redlands Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday, June 19, at an undisclosed location within the city.
Police said checkpoint locations are selected based on data identifying areas with a history of impaired driving-related crashes. The department said the primary goal is to improve public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sgt. Jeffrey Frisch, who supervises the Redlands Police Department’s Traffic Division, said in a statement. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
Police reminded drivers that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can affect a person's ability to drive safely. The department also noted that while medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
According to the department, drivers convicted of a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver's license.
The checkpoint is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
