Redlands Earth Day 2024: Projects throughout the city on Saturday

Redlands will celebrate Earth Day with the annual event A Day of Climate Action on Saturday, April 20th . 

According to organizers, this year's focus is on how residents can live more sustainably.

Informational and hands-on projects will be hosted by organizations and residents throughout the city from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. The projects span a range of climate-focused categories, such as building a sustainable food system, preparing for disasters, creating a more resilient lifestyle, advocating for a healthier, sustainable planet, and saving water & species.

At 12:30 p.m. there is a community celebration of Earth Day at the Redlands Bowl with information tables about sustainable living, live music, free food, and activities for children. Participants can also visit the Mission Gables patio at the Bowl for a clothing swap organized by ANCA Youth.

Building a Sustainable Food System

Complementing Compost

Come get your hands dirty building a thermophilic compost pile.

Local Farm Tour: Three Sisters Farm

Learn about the sustainable, organic practices on the farm and see our newest straw bale building.

Wild Greens!

Come learn the nutritional benefits of eating wild weeds and how to identify edible weeds in your backyard.

Fermenting Fun

A Master Food Preserver will demonstrate several fermentation recipes that can be made at home, including pickles, sauerkraut, and kombucha.

Build Your Own Worm Composting Bin

A DIY class where you'll make your own worm composting bin that turns your food scraps into beautiful soil for your garden and plants.

It All Starts with a Seed

Plant seedlings and receive tips and tricks about starting your own garden.

Plants for the Pantry!

Prepare and plant vegetables in our garden boxes and contribute to a more sustainable food system right in your community.

Growing Food in Whatever Space You Have

Self-Guided Tour with a map of pollinator-friendly plants, fruit trees, and vines on an urban farm designed to encourage locally grown food, cool neighborhoods, protect biodiversity, and support our local economy.

Let's Get the Garden Ready for the Kids

Help clean up the Franklin Elementary School garden and ready it for the students to plant flowers and vegetables.

Saving Water & Species

Gardening to Attract Pollinators

An informal, hands-on workshop to learn about the importance of gardening to attract pollinators and the plants that do so, followed by adding pollinator-attracting plants to the gardens at the church.

Create Berms Around Orange Trees 

Help us keep our trees hydrated and happy by building berms (bowls) around the base of the orange trees for water retention.

Battle the Invaders at Caroline Park!

Learn to recognize the invasive plants that threaten Redlands' natural as well as home landscapes. We will meet at Caroline Park, a park dedicated to California's native plants.

Sustainable Landscaping: Build a Dry Riverbed in Your Lawn

A hands-on workshop on how to build a dry river bed to conserve water, along with valuable information from a client scientist on the benefits of conversion of turf to xeriscape lawns.

Artful Community Science: Supporting Native Bees & Ecosystems Through Photography

Join National Geographic Explorer, TEDx speaker, and community scientist Krystle Hickman as she takes us on a journey to a deeper appreciation and understanding of bees and their critical role through her stunning photography.

Pollinator Gardening

Participate in hands-on gardening activities such as weeding and planting pollinator flowers.

Water, Water Nowhere

Explore the Santa Ana River Watershed in a two-mile hike to the top of the Saha'tapa Mesa, the spectacularly-beautiful flat area between Live Oak and San Timoteo Canyons.

Participate in Sierra Club's National Earth Day Story Slam - sharing our personal experiences and understanding of Clean Transportation and making our voices heard.

Medicinal Plant Walk at the SURF Garden 

A multi-sensory stroll through a medicinal garden—touch, taste, see and smell the abundance of native plant life and their traditional uses.

Stylecycle Youth Clothing Swap: Where Style Meets Sustainability

Refresh your wardrobe while learning about sustainable fashion. Bring gently used clothing items that need a new home (no holes, rips, stains. etc.) and find new pieces. Hang out with other youth concerned about climate change.

A Pathway to Clean Energy 

Participants will get a good foundation on what can be done to Go Green with multiple ways to save on energy and money.

Clean Cleaning! 

Discover household cleaners that are environmentally friendly, work effectively and are made from simple zero waste ingredients. Bring 8 oz. bottles for filling.

Got Broken Stuff? Get it fixed at the Free Earth Day Repair Café 

The Repair Cafe is all about fixing things for FREE! Local handy men and women who love to fix things will be available to fix your item on the spot. Repairable items include clothing, small appliances, jewelry, bikes, computers, and much more.

Preparing for Disasters

Disaster Preparedness to Help Save Lives & the Earth 

The Common Vision Coalition believes that emergency preparedness is both an environmental and social issue; it can be physically and mentally taxing. Creating and implementing a family action plan is vital.

Disaster Preparedness… Don't Shake It Off! 

Come enjoy breakfast and learn how to prepare and what to do in the event of a natural or manmade disaster. Learn to make your own emergency kit and plan. Experience an 8.0 magnitude earthquake in the Shaker Trailor!
