Redlands Police officers responded to a range of incidents over the past week, including the use of the department’s new Drone as First Responder program to locate a person in crisis and assist in an investigation involving armed suspects at an apartment complex.

According to the Redlands Police Department weekly update covering May 14 to 21, officers on Sunday, May 17, responded to a report of an adult male experiencing a mental health crisis after a family member intervened to stop him from harming himself. Police said the man then attempted to harm the family member and left the residence.

RPD’s Drone as First Responder program, known as Maverick 1, was deployed and quickly located the man, allowing officers to connect him with mental health evaluation and services.

Later that same day, officers responded to an apartment complex after a driver reported being confronted by several subjects who blocked his vehicle near a garage. Police said two suspects approached the victim’s-side window, displayed handguns in their waistbands and ordered him out of the vehicle.

The victim drove away and contacted police.

Maverick 1 again responded first to the scene and observed several subjects gathered in an open garage, according to police. Officers detained individuals in the garage and a nearby apartment. During a field identification, the victim identified a juvenile as one of the suspects who brandished a firearm.

Police said officers searched the residence with parental consent but did not locate the firearm. The juvenile was arrested and booked into Juvenile Hall. The second suspect remained outstanding as of Wednesday, and the investigation is ongoing.

Backyard break-in

In another incident, officers arrested a suspect May 15 after the individual allegedly entered a backyard in the 00 block of Buena Vista Street, damaged property and broke a window before fleeing. Officers later located a suspect matching the description who was intoxicated and unable to care for himself, police said.

Traffic stop results in firearm, drug arrest

On May 19, an officer conducting a traffic stop reportedly discovered about 5 grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia on a driver. During a vehicle search, officers also located a loaded Glock 17 handgun equipped with a high-capacity magazine containing 18 rounds of ammunition. The driver was arrested without incident.

Arson investigation

Police are assisting Redlands Fire Department investigators in an arson investigation tied to a May 20 fire allegedly started when an unknown suspect set a backpack on fire. The incident was reportedly captured on surveillance video from a nearby business, but the suspect was not located.

Attempted burglary

In a separate case Wednesday, officers responded to an attempted burglary at an industrial complex after a security guard reported seeing two suspects attempting to pry open a door with crowbars. The suspects fled into a nearby wash and orange groves.

San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies initially pursued the suspects before determining the incident occurred within Redlands city limits. With assistance from deputies, Redlands officers located one suspect hiding in the grove. Police said the suspect was positively identified by security personnel and arrested. A second suspect was not found.

iPhone theft reported

That same day, officers responded to a theft report after a victim arranged to meet a potential buyer for an iPhone 17 Pro Max. According to police, the suspect asked to inspect the phone before fleeing on foot with the device. Officers searched the area but did not locate the suspect.
