REDLANDS, Calif. — Drivers should expect continued lane closures, detours and reduced speeds as Caltrans moves forward with a $10.4 million pavement rehabilitation and safety project in Redlands.

Work is underway at several locations along Lugonia Avenue, or State Route 38, and nearby streets. Over the next few weeks, crews are expected to install curb ramps, remove and replace concrete and complete drainage improvements.

Current work areas include:

  • Pearl Avenue and North Sixth Street
  • Orange Street and Colton Avenue
  • Sixth Street and The Terrace
  • Colton Avenue and Alta Street
  • Sixth Street and Colton Avenue
  • Orange Street and Sun Avenue
  • Sixth Street near the eastbound I-10 exit

Channelizers are also being installed to provide safe pedestrian access through construction areas, according to Caltrans.

The larger project includes upgrades to 73 curb ramps to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards, eight new bus pads, Class I bike lanes, sidewalk improvements, new traffic signal poles, accessibility upgrades to pedestrian signals and pavement rehabilitation.

Construction is generally scheduled from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, although nighttime and weekend work may occur as needed.

Drivers should anticipate temporary sidewalk, lane and shoulder closures, along with possible detours and one-way traffic controls. Speed limits will be reduced by 10 mph through the construction zone, and temporary traffic breaks may be used to accommodate traffic shifts.

Caltrans advises motorists to allow extra travel time, follow posted detours and watch for crews and equipment.

The project is expected to be completed in late 2027.
