Landscape Transformations – Goodbye Lawn, Hello Sustainable Yard
Would you like to transform your landscape from turf to a drought-tolerant garden paradise?
Accelerate Neighborhood Climate Action (ANCA) is hosting a Resilient Living program on Redlands-friendly landscapes and native plants that can save water, lower costs and reduce maintenance. Master Gardener Anita Matlick will introduce the steps for a successful lawn transformation, and three Redlands residents will share their experiences with landscape conversions.
The presentation will take place Wednesday, March 19, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Redlands Flores Senior Center, 111 W. Lugonia Ave. Registration on Eventbrite is encouraged.
ANCA volunteer and water engineer Dick Corneille explained that 75% of water use in Redlands is residential, with about 70% of that used outdoors, primarily for irrigation. Reducing turf is one of the most effective ways to achieve immediate water savings. Other benefits of replacing a lawn with a drought-tolerant landscape include lower maintenance costs, support for pollinators and a more diverse, visually appealing yard. The city of Redlands offers rebates for replacing grass with drought-tolerant landscaping.
At the event, residents will discuss their landscape transformations, covering costs, time, plant selection, irrigation, maintenance and more. These homeowners completed low-cost conversions and did some or all of the work themselves. Corneille said his own landscape conversion reduced his overall water use by about two-thirds.
As Master Gardener Anita Matlick says, “If the only person on your turf is the person who mows it, consider a landscape transformation.”
ANCA is a nonprofit organization working collaboratively to build community climate resilience neighborhood by neighborhood.
