Yucaipa softball wins 8th straight, opens two-game CBL lead with four to play

Yucaipa High School defeated Redlands High 14-1 on April 16 and edged Cajon High 6-4 Tuesday to extend its winning streak to eight games heading into Thursday’s (April 23) Citrus Belt League game at home against Citrus Valley High.

The Thunderbirds now have a two-game lead in the CBL standings over Beaumont (4-2) with four games remaining in the regular season. Redlands East Valley and Citrus Valley are tied for third at 3-3. Cajon stands at 2-4 and Redlands is 0-6.

In the win over Redlands, Yucaipa’s Layla Waysz hit three home runs and drove in seven of the team’s 14 runs, while her sister Liberty Waysz was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Aurora Monarrez also homered for Yucaipa.

In the circle, Brooklyn Dent allowed just two hits with 11 strikeouts in five innings. Avery Andrade accounted for Redlands’ only run with a home run in the fourth inning.

Yucaipa built a 5-1 lead early against Cajon on Tuesday, but the Cowgirls rallied for three runs in the fourth to close the gap. Dent came on in relief of starting pitcher Emily Mendoza and shut out Cajon over the final three innings, allowing one hit with three strikeouts.

Sophomore Peyton Seevers tripled and homered and scored twice for Yucaipa. Reece Van Arsdale hit two doubles, scored twice and drove in a run. Shae DeCecca also homered for the Thunderbirds. Sophia Bicondova, Liberty Waysz and Madison King each added an RBI.

Cajon’s Jolize Holley was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while teammate Makayla Thurston drove in two runs with a base hit.

Citrus Valley 4, Cajon 2

The Blackhawks took a 4-0 lead early, and Olivia Acuna pitched a complete-game four-hitter with five strikeouts in the April 16 win over Cajon.

Monse Matute had two hits, including a home run. Camrynn Culp was 2-for-3 with a double, and Natalie Estrada went 3-for-4 for Citrus Valley. Madison Gallardo led Cajon with a home run and two RBI.

Beaumont 6, Redlands East Valley 5

Beaumont led 3-0 early in its April 16 game, but REV rallied for five runs in the third. The Cougars tied the game at 5-5 in the fourth and scored the winning run in the sixth.

Lakaii Christensen was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for REV. Her sister Leelii had a double and an RBI. Milee Najera doubled in another run, and Jadah Nordby doubled and drove in two runs.

Redlands East Valley 13, Citrus Valley 2

Leelii Christensen had three hits, including a double and a triple, scored twice and drove in five runs as the Wildcats routed Citrus Valley on Tuesday (April 21).

Olivia Moore doubled and drove in two runs. Mele Wilson scored twice and drove in three runs. Jadah Nordby homered with two RBI. Alexis Halamicek was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Gabby Torres was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Isa Navarro pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits and one earned run.

For Citrus Valley, Addison King was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Natalie Estrada added two hits and scored a run.

Beaumont 15, Redlands 1

Beaumont collected 15 hits in Tuesday’s rout, though no individual statistics were reported. Redlands managed five hits.

Freshman Makayla Stark was 2-for-2, and Avery Andrade walked and scored the Terriers’ only run. Redlands has now lost seven straight and nine of its last 10 games.
