REDLANDS, Calif. — The Redlands Unified School Board voted 4-0 Wednesday, May 27 to approve certificated layoffs affecting 24 employees across the district during a special meeting that lasted about five minutes.

Why it matters: The layoffs impact counselors, teachers, nurses and student support staff at multiple school sites and programs as the district continues addressing ongoing budget challenges ahead of the 2026-27 school year.

Details: Trustees approved Resolution No. 2025-2026-29 without discussion. Board Vice President Patty Holohan was absent from the May 27 meeting.

According to the resolution, the district originally approved plans in January to reduce or eliminate 91 full-time equivalent certificated positions. District administration later reduced that number to 71 positions through vacancies, attrition and staffing adjustments.

The resolution stated that only 27 employees ultimately received preliminary layoff notices in March. Three notices were later rescinded due to attrition and finalized bumping determinations, leaving 24 final layoffs.

Twenty-one employees requested hearings through the Office of Administrative Hearings, while six employees waived their rights to a hearing by not responding within the required timeframe, according to the resolution.

An administrative law judge issued a proposed decision May 19 upholding the layoffs for the 19 remaining respondents, along with the five non-respondents through a default judgment.

Of the positions eliminated, 17 were counselors. Two academic case carriers were laid off along with a high school diploma teacher, registered nurse, program specialist, social studies teacher and an ESL teacher. Several of the layoffs were tied to Redlands Adult School, including counseling, ESL and diploma program positions.

The most recent round of layoffs brings the district’s total confirmed layoffs this month to 43 employees. On May 12, the Redlands Unified School Board finalized layoffs for 19 classified employees in nonteaching positions, including elementary library paraprofessionals, special education aides and student health staff.

Moving forward: The layoffs will take effect at the close of the current school year, on or before June 30, 2026. Affected employees will retain reemployment rights under state law if positions become available in the future.
