City Council set to vote on bids for Phase I, which is expected to take up to two years
REDLANDS, Calif. — The Redlands City Council will consider approving $3.49 million in contracts Tuesday to advance the first phase of a planned new police station on Redlands Boulevard.
The project, referred to by the city as the Redlands Police Department Safety Hall, would serve as a new facility for the police department and is planned for property the city purchased in 2022 at 1625 W. Redlands Blvd.
The proposed agreements would fund demolition, abatement and grading work at the site. City staff are recommending awarding contracts to Greenleaf Engineering for demolition and abatement and Doja Inc. for earthwork, with a combined cost not to exceed $3,494,000, including $230,000 in contingency funds. The council would also need to approve an equivalent appropriation to fund the work.
The project would be funded through a transfer from the city’s General Fund Reserve for Future Facilities, which has a current balance of about $13.6 million. If approved, the transfer would reduce that reserve to roughly $10.1 million, according to the staff report.
According to the staff report, the project’s first phase was put out to bid earlier this year, drawing 14 bids for demolition and abatement and 12 bids for earthwork. City staff and the project’s construction manager, Tilden-Coil Constructors, reviewed the submissions and recommended the selected contractors based on pricing and qualifications.
The contract allows roughly two years to complete the work once construction begins.
The proposed action is considered exempt from environmental review under the California Environmental Quality Act.
The police station project is part of a broader effort to modernize the city’s public safety facilities. The council previously approved design and construction management contracts in 2023, though the total cost and timeline for the full project have not been detailed.
The item is scheduled for consideration under new business during the council’s meeting on Tuesday, April 7.
