Redlands launches 2025 community survey on quality of life, city services

The city of Redlands is inviting residents to weigh in on local government priorities and quality of life through its annual online community survey that opened this week.

Why it matters: The National Community Survey™, developed by independent consultant Polco, asks residents about city services, community characteristics and priorities for the future. Responses allow Redlands to compare results with other cities nationwide, track changes in residents’ opinions over time and plan for the future.

How it works: A random sample of residents received invitations earlier in August. Now all Redlands residents 18 and older are encouraged to participate before the Sept. 15 deadline.

💧 Redlands approves $369K groundwater contamination investigation: City Council has hired Rincon Consultants to investigate possible soil and water contamination at the Wastewater Treatment Plant after landfill leachate was improperly disposed of there for about six years. The study will include soil sampling, groundwater monitoring wells and lab testing. Read more here.

📦 Yucaipa warehouse opponents launch referendum campaign: Residents fighting the 2 million-square-foot Pacific Oaks Commerce Center say they’ve met their initial fundraising goal and will now gather signatures to put the City Council’s approval on the November ballot. Opponents cite traffic, pollution and loss of open space. Organizers must collect about 4,700 valid signatures within 30 days. Read more here:

🤳 Unsecured firearms lead to Redlands man’s arrest: A Redlands man was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment after police said his teenage son accessed unsecured firearms and sent a photo of himself holding a gun to his head. Read more here.

🚧 DUI checkpoint results: Redlands police arrest one driver on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and cite two drivers for license violations during Labor Day weekend checkpoint. Read more here.

🚔 Weekly police report: Aug. 28 - Sept. 4 Redlands police are investigating a pool party shooting, a DUI injury crash, and an overnight burglary at a local grocery store. Read more here.

👮‍♀️RPD opens registration for fall PEACE Academy: This free six-week course offers a behind-the-scenes look at police work, covering topics like investigations, patrol operations and traffic laws, plus a chance to join officers for a ride-along. Classes run Friday evenings, Sept. 12–Oct. 17, at the Joslyn Center. Open to Redlands residents or workers age 16+ with no criminal record. Register here.

🏆 Legendary coach Dick Bruich returns to the sidelines: The former Fontana and Kaiser High coaching great with 292 career wins, four section titles and a mythical 1987 national championship, is now an unpaid assistant for his son, Citrus Valley head coach Kurt Bruich. A year after the passing of his wife Cathy, Dick is helping coach the Blackhawks’ offensive line while also lending a hand at Summit High. Former players and local coaches say his presence is a huge boost for the program. Read more here.

🏈 Citrus Valley starts strong but falls to Etiwanda, 35-13: The Blackhawks jumped out to a 10-0 lead, but the Eagles came back in the second half with four touchdowns to secure the win. Citrus Valley travels to La Quinta this Friday. Read more here.

Citrus Valley High football coach Kurt Bruich couldn’t have scripted it any better. Visiting Etiwanda High, in the night’s opening scene, prances onto the field full of swag and bluster, then does a first-half belly flop worthy of chubby catcher Mike Engelberg in the Bad News Bears.

🐾 Bulldogs Kick Off Football Season Saturday: The University of Redlands football team opens its season at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, against George Fox University of Newberg, Oregon. The Bulldogs, coming off a 3-7 season, will unveil a new-look offense under first-year coordinator Eric Acciani, who helped Tennessee Tech win a conference title in 2024. Head coach Jim Good also welcomes transfer quarterback Luke Coleman and a mix of local talent, including receiver Julien Scarbrough of Redlands High. Redlands has split eight games with the Bruins since 2014, though George Fox has won the last two. Read more here.

Community Forward Redlands is deeply saddened to share the passing of our contributing journalist and photographer, Dave Card.

Dave’s lens captured life in Redlands with warmth, detail, and authenticity. Whether following a wildfire or documenting our community’s many events and celebrations, his photos told the story of our city in a way words alone could not.

He generously shared his time and talent with Community Forward Redlands, helping us preserve moments both big and small. In addition to his photography, he was a regular contributor to our news coverage.

More than his photographs, Dave will be remembered for his presence—kind, steady, and deeply rooted in the community he loved.
