REDLANDS, Calif. — Two new wildfire detection cameras are now operating in north Redlands, expanding the city's ability to monitor fire conditions and provide real-time situational awareness for firefighters and emergency managers.
The cameras, installed through a partnership between the City of Redlands and the University of California San Diego's ALERTCalifornia program, monitor the northern portion of the city and the adjacent Santa Ana River wash. Named Redlands KREI 1 and Redlands KREI 2, they complement the existing Sunset Redlands 1 and Sunset Redlands 2 cameras that monitor the southern portion of the city.
City officials said the cameras are part of Redlands' Community Wildfire Protection Plan, which uses technology, vegetation management and public education to reduce wildfire risk and improve emergency response.
Officials said each camera undergoes a privacy review before becoming operational. Areas that include private homes and businesses are permanently pixelated to protect residents' privacy.
The city encouraged residents to maintain defensible space around their homes, stay informed during fire season and participate in local wildfire preparedness programs.
The new cameras are the latest addition to the city's ongoing wildfire preparedness efforts. Earlier this month, Redlands was designated a 2026 Fire Risk Reduction Community by the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection, recognizing years of planning, mitigation and infrastructure improvements aimed at reducing wildfire risk.
