REDLANDS, Calif. — A man accused of breaking into a Redlands electronics store through the roof and stealing $10,000 in merchandise returned days later and tried to sell some of the stolen goods back to the same business, according to Redlands police.
The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Anthony Thomas Wheat, was already wanted for failing to appear in court in a separate case involving the theft of a puppy valued at up to $7,000.
The electronics store burglary occurred Oct. 21 at RAS Electronics, 1032 Orange St. Surveillance footage showed a man lowering himself through the roof into the business before filling a trash can with gaming consoles, cell phones and other electronics, police said.
Two days later, a man walked into the store and dropped off a cell phone for repair.
When he returned the following day, he offered to pay for the repair by selling the business a gaming console. An employee recognized the console as one of the items stolen during the burglary, according to police.
Investigators identified Wheat as the suspect in both the burglary and the attempted sale.
Suspect linked to earlier puppy theft
The investigation also connected Wheat to an Oct. 9 arrest involving the theft of a 6-month-old female American Bully puppy from a nearby apartment complex.
In that case, police said Wheat had previously asked about buying the dog, which was valued between $5,000 and $7,000. Surveillance footage later showed a suspect breaking in and stealing the puppy.
Wheat subsequently failed to appear for a court hearing, resulting in a $150,000 felony arrest warrant.
On Oct. 29, Redlands police searched Wheat's apartment in the 1100 block of Orange Street and recovered merchandise stolen from RAS Electronics. Police said Wheat was also wearing clothing that matched what the burglary suspect wore in surveillance footage.
The recovered merchandise was returned to the business.
Wheat was being held at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga in lieu of $10,000 bail on charges of burglary, grand theft and vandalism, according to police.
