EDLANDS, Calif. — Loma Linda University Health and Lifepoint Rehabilitation broke ground Aug. 12 on a new 80-bed rehabilitation hospital expected to nearly double the health system’s inpatient rehabilitation capacity.

The Loma Linda University Rehabilitation Hospital will be built at 11207 New Jersey St., near the Redlands-Loma Linda border. The project is a joint venture between Loma Linda University Health and Lifepoint Rehabilitation, an operating division of Lifepoint Health, and is expected to open in summer 2028.

Once the new hospital opens, Loma Linda University Health plans to transition its existing inpatient rehabilitation services at East Campus Hospital to the new facility.

“For three decades, our East Campus Hospital has provided comprehensive rehabilitation services to those recovering from life-altering conditions,” Anthony Hilliard, president and CEO of Loma Linda University Health, said in a statement.

The new hospital will allow the health system to “nearly double our capacity,” Hilliard said, while helping it meet growing demand for rehabilitation care in the region.

The free-standing hospital will provide intensive rehabilitation services for adults recovering from strokes, neurological diseases, brain and spinal cord injuries and other debilitating illnesses or injuries.

Services will include rehabilitation nursing, physical and occupational therapy and speech pathology. According to Loma Linda University Health, the hospital will include adaptive units, multidisciplinary therapy gyms and other amenities designed to encourage patients to move and participate in daily activities as part of their recovery.

The hospital will be operated through the partnership between Loma Linda University Health and Lifepoint Rehabilitation.

“Providing high-quality, evidence-driven specialty care is the driving force of this partnership,” Russ Bailey, president of Lifepoint Rehabilitation, said in a statement. “We are deeply committed to investing in the people, facilities and cutting-edge technologies that empower patients to reclaim their independence, close to home.”

When it opens, the Redlands facility will become part of Lifepoint Rehabilitation’s network of more than 50 rehabilitation hospitals nationwide.
