Kamron Hopson shoots 16-under to claim medalist honors, lead Coyotes to team title
Former Redlands High School golfer Kamron Hopson shot 16 under par for 54 holes to capture medalist honors at the Cal State San Bernardino Coyote Classic at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont.
Hopson, a junior on the Coyotes golf team, shot rounds of 69, 65 and 66 to finish the tournament with a score of 200, a mark that ranks No. 3 on the program’s list for best 54-hole scores in a tournament.
In his low round of the tourney, Hopson eagled the 523-yard par-5 16th hole, sank six birdie putts and made only one bogey for a 65. For the tournament, he made 18 birdies and just four bogeys on the 7,078-yard, par-72 course.
His effort propelled the Coyotes to the team title at 21 under par, beating a field of 12 collegiate competitors. CSUSB finished ahead of Cal State Monterey Bay by 19 shots and third-place Chico State by 20 shots.
The CSUSB record for 54 holes is 196, shot by Gene Webster of San Bernardino in 2010, also at the Coyote Classic, which was then held at Arrowhead Country Club in the city. He shot 69-63-64 en route to earning NCAA Division II All-America honors three times.
Hopson is no stranger to success in golf. In 2021, he led Redlands High to the CIF Southern Section Division 4 title and was the division’s individual champion. He was a four-time varsity letter winner for the Terriers.
As a freshman at CSUSB in 2023-24, Hopson played in 10 tournaments with a best finish of sixth place and was five under par after 36 holes at the CCAA conference championships before dropping back.
Hopson played in only five tournaments in 2024-25 but was on board when CSUSB made it to the NCAA Division II national championship tournament, where he played two rounds at one over par.
In addition, he was named to the CCAA all-academic team.
His goal is to play professional golf.
Hopson’s older brother Kaden played college baseball at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. He was signed as a free agent by the Los Angeles Angels in 2024 and is scheduled to be a catcher with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes Class A team this season.
Their father, Mark Hopson, is the current golf coach at Redlands High School.
