Editorial Policies
Editorial standards, code of ethics and correction policy for Community Forward Redlands
Community Forward Redlands is an independent, locally owned news organization serving Redlands, California. These policies guide our reporting and our commitment to accountability, transparency, and public service.
Editorial Standards
Community Forward Redlands is committed to reporting that is accurate, fair, independent and transparent. We seek the truth, verify information before publication and provide context so readers can understand issues affecting the Redlands community.
We make every reasonable effort to seek comment from individuals or organizations who are the subject of critical reporting before publication.
Code of Ethics
Community Forward Redlands follows the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics, including the principles of seeking truth and reporting it, minimizing harm, acting independently and being accountable and transparent.
- Impartiality: Reporters should strive to maintain impartiality in their reporting. Personal opinions or biases must not influence the tone or content of the news.
- Transparency: If there are limitations to our reporting (e.g., inability to reach a critical source), this will be clearly disclosed to our readers.
- Conflicts of Interest: Staff and contributors must avoid financial, political or personal conflicts of interest that could compromise, or appear to compromise, the integrity of our reporting. Any unavoidable conflicts will be disclosed to readers or the assignment will be reassigned.
Editorial Decisions and Independence
- Editorial Independence: Editorial decisions are made solely by Community Forward Redlands' editorial leadership. Advertisers, sponsors, donors, grantmakers and community partners do not influence news coverage, story selection or editorial conclusions. Sponsored content is clearly labeled so readers can distinguish it from newsroom reporting.
- Reporter Autonomy: Reporters have the freedom to pursue stories that they believe are in the public interest. Editorial staff will support reporters in their work, ensuring that stories are well-researched and balanced.
- Collaboration: Articles in full are not given to sources to review prior to publication. One exception is the sharing of excerpts to confirm the accuracy of information.
Sponsored Content Policy
Sponsored stories, paid partnerships and advertising are clearly identified. Sponsors do not review or approve Community Forward Redlands' independent news coverage prior to publication.
Corrections Policy
Community Forward Redlands is committed to correcting factual errors promptly and transparently.
Readers who believe an article contains an error may contact us at news@communityforwardredlands.com.
When an error is confirmed:
- Minor typographical or grammatical errors that do not affect meaning may be corrected without a formal editor's note.
- Factual corrections or clarifications will be noted at the bottom of the article with the date of the correction and an explanation of what was changed.
- Significant corrections are reviewed and approved by the editor before the correction is published.
Sources
- Verification: We verify information using the most reliable available sources. When appropriate, we seek confirmation from multiple independent sources before publishing significant factual claims.
- Anonymous Sources: We prefer to attribute information to named sources. Anonymous sources may only be used when the information is vital to the public interest, and the source’s safety or employment is at risk. Approval from an editor is required before using anonymous sources.
- Source Relationships: Reporters must disclose any personal or professional relationship with a source that could create a real or perceived conflict of interest before publication.
Interviews
- Informed Consent: Interviewees must be informed that they are speaking with a reporter and that their comments may be used in a published article. This is particularly important in off-the-record or on-background interviews.
- Recording: Reporters should seek permission before recording interviews. The purpose of the recording should be explained, and interviewees should be informed that the recording is for accuracy in reporting. Interview recordings and videos are the property of Community Forward Redlands.
- Quotes: Quotes should be reported accurately and in context. Misquoting or taking statements out of context is strictly prohibited.
- Interview Requests: When requesting an interview, reporters should clearly explain the topic and purpose of the interview. Reporters should be respectful of interviewees' time and availability.
- Data Security: Reporters must take steps to secure sensitive data, including notes, recordings, and other materials related to their stories.
Community Engagement
- Responsiveness: We value input from our community and are committed to responding to feedback and engaging with our readers.
- Community Impact: We strive to produce journalism that serves the public good and contributes positively to the Redlands community.
- Community Support: We only share fundraising or community crowdfunding campaigns in connection to an official police or fire department report and once it has been verified as trustworthy.
