Tony-winning musical blends dark fairy tales with greener stage practices
REDLANDS, Calif. — The University of Redlands School of Performing Arts is pairing a musical theatre classic with environmentally conscious production methods in its upcoming staging of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods.
Widely regarded as a cornerstone of modern musical theatre, Into the Woods is a witty and whimsical reimagining of familiar fairy tales. A dark comedy, the story draws from the more unsettling elements of traditional folklore, exploring themes of death, betrayal and unfulfilled dreams. Written by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim, the show won Tony Awards for best score and best book and has become an international sensation since its Broadway debut.
The University’s production, staged at the Glenn Wallichs Theatre, also serves as a working model of sustainable theatre.
Following the Theatre Green Book framework, the production aims to reduce carbon emissions through environmentally responsible design and operational practices. Under the model, at least 50% of materials used for sets, props and costumes must be reused or recycled, and 65% of materials from the final production must be reused or recycled after the show closes.
The approach supports what organizers describe as a “circular economy,” keeping raw materials in use for as long as possible and diverting them from landfills.
Faculty say the sustainable theatre initiative functions as a hands-on learning laboratory for students.
From scenic design to stagecraft, students are challenged to rethink traditional production methods, consider environmental impacts and develop creative solutions they can carry into professional theatre careers.
“Theatre is a powerful medium to respond to the most pressing issues of our time,” said Gregory Ramos, department head and director of Into the Woods. “Recognizing the growing climate crisis, we turn toward sustainable theatre as a response. Sustainable theatre practices engage our students in innovative thinking, problem solving, and most importantly, finding ways toward solutions."
The musical opens March 28 at the Glenn Wallichs Theatre (380 N. University St., Redlands). Schedule and ticket information available here.
