REDLANDS, Calif. — Two separate train-versus-vehicle collisions shut down major roadways in Redlands on Jan. 4, including one crash involving a Metrolink commuter train and another involving a westbound freight train that sent one driver to a hospital for evaluation, according to the Redlands Fire Department.

The first incident was reported at about 5:45 a.m. at the intersection of Colton Avenue and Redlands Boulevard, where firefighters responded to a traffic collision involving a Metrolink train and a passenger vehicle, the department said in a report on social media Sunday.

When crews arrived, they found a small sedan wedged under the front of the train, fire officials said. Preliminary information indicated the vehicle had been stopped on the tracks and facing the eastbound train prior to impact. No occupants were found inside the vehicle, the department said.

Fire officials said no injuries were reported among the train passengers or crew, and the cause of the incident remains under investigation.

Freight train collision

Later the same day, firefighters responded at about 7 p.m. to a second train-versus-vehicle collision at San Timoteo Canyon Road near Fern Avenue, the department said.

Initial reports indicated the driver may have made a wrong turn and became stuck on the railroad tracks, according to the department. Fire officials said the driver was able to exit the vehicle before a westbound freight train struck the vehicle and pushed it off the tracks.

The driver was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, fire officials said. No train occupants were injured.

The Redlands Police Department shut down San Timoteo Canyon Road at Fern Avenue for an extended period Sunday evening while officers removed the vehicle and investigated the crash, officials said.

Railroad safety reminder

In a safety reminder following the two incidents, fire officials urged motorists to exit their vehicle immediately and move away from the tracks if they become stranded on railroad tracks. The department also warned drivers not to attempt to beat a train or drive around crossing gates, citing the inability of trains to stop quickly.

The most recent fatal train-versus-vehicle collision in Redlands occurred on April 4, 2023, when a Metrolink train struck a vehicle at the Alabama Street crossing near Redlands Boulevard, killing a mother and her 11-year-old daughter, according to earlier reports.
