Terrier volleyball reaches quarterfinals for sixth time in program history

The Redlands High girls volleyball team has reached rarefied air.

The Terriers defeated San Clemente 3-2 on Thursday in the CIF-Southern Section Division II second round. The scores were 25-17, 25-23, 19-25, 14-25, 15-13.

It was the 31st victory for the Terriers, a school record.

Redlands advances to the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Santa Margarita.

The Terriers’ win against San Clemente came two days after Redlands swept Etiwanda, also at home.

Redlands won a section title in 1995 under coach Gene Melcher. The Terriers defeated Rim of the World 19-17, 15-13, 15-13 in the finals at Cypress College. They also made the CIF-State tournament that year.

The Terriers advanced to the section quarterfinals in 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2021, and, of course, this season.

BULLDOGS DOWN CAL LU IN DOUBLE OT

The University of Redlands football team defeated California Lutheran 30-24 in double overtime on Saturday in Thousand Oaks.

Redlands got the ball first in the second overtime and scored on 1-yard run by Jakai Torres. The score was set up by a pass interference penalty.

Quarterback Tobey Schmidt threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns for Redlands.

The Bulldogs led 17-3 in the fourth quarter before allowing Cal Lu to score 14 points to tie the game.

REV DEFEATS YUCAIPA; REDLANDS, CV ROUTED

Redlands East Valley defeated Yucaipa 43-41 in Citrus Belt League football on Friday night.

REV quarterback Isaac Vitela threw for 255 yards and three touchdowns. Vitela also rushed for 160 yards and three TDs for REV (6-3 overall, 3-1 league).

Taamir Mack, Marcus Medina and Noah Waller all had TD catches for REV. Micah Ley and Lincoln Bunker each had 20 tackles. Anthony Aguilar contributed seven tackles and Loghun Maynard had six.

In other CBL play, Citrus Valley fell to Beaumont 56-3 and Redlands lost to Cajon 67-0.

In a Mesquite League game on Friday night, Arrowhead Christian lost to Western Christian 35-0.

REDLANDS PERFECT IN GIRLS TENNIS

The Redlands High girls tennis team finished 10-0 in the CBL after recent wins against Yucaipa (10-8) and Cajon (13-5).

Yucaipa finished second in the CBL at 8-2 and Citrus Valley was third at 6-4.

REV FALLS TO CAJON

The Redlands East Valley flag football team lost 13-7 to Cajon in CIF-Southern Section first-round action. Cajon (20-2) extended its winning streak to 11 games. REV finished its season 19-9.

“We fell short in our D2 first round playoff game, but we fought literally until the last second,” REV coach Andrew Saibene said via social media.

Beaumont, which went 5-0 in the CBL regular season, lost its section playoff opener 31-21 to Gahr.

YUCAIPA DEFEATS REV FOR TITLE

The Yucaipa High boys water polo team defeated Redlands East Valley 15-4 on Wednesday in the championship game of the CBL Carousel.

The game was played at Crafton Hills College.

REV (14-14) advances to the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs and is at Chino Hills (24-4) on Thursday in a first-round game. Redlands High (18-13) is at Malibu (19-7) in a first-round D2 game.

REDLANDS’ TAYLOR LEADS TITANS

Redlands’ Ryan Taylor coaches the Grand Terrace High football team. The Titans (5-4 overall, 1-1 Sunkist League) rallied for a 36-29 victory on Thursday night against Eisenhower.

Taylor played for former coach Chris Ybarra at Aquinas High.

EAGLES WIN OPENER

The Arrowhead Christian Academy girls volleyball team has reached the CIF-SS Division 6 quarterfinals.

The Eagles defeated Gabrielino 3-1 and South Hills 3-0 last week. Arrowhead Christian is at Cantwell Sacred Heart at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29.

Redlands Adventist Academy lost a D9 opener to La Quinta of Westminster 3-2.

Another Redlands private school, Packinghouse Christian, got swept by Colton in the opening round.

BEAUMONT WINS GOLF TITLE; AZURIN, LEE ADVANCE

Beaumont (13-2) went unbeaten in CBL golf to win the title.

Yucaipa defeated REV in a recent match 257-286 to finish second in league at 6-4. Redlands went 5-4, Citrus Valley 5-5 and REV 1-6. Some scores were not reported to CIF-SS or media outlets such as MaxPreps or si.com.

In the CBL individual finals, Redlands’ Ariana Azurin and Madison Lee finished third and fourth, respectively, to advance to the CIF-SS Individuals on Monday, Oct. 27 at Bear Valley Country Club in Victorville.
