REDLANDS, Calif. — A 16-year-old was arrested early Monday morning after leading police on a short vehicle pursuit in a stolen car, one of several incidents Redlands police responded to over the Memorial Day weekend, including a drug and weapons arrest and an attempted burglary caught on camera.
Shortly before 2 a.m. Monday, May 26, an officer attempted to stop a 2013 Kia Optima after it sped away near Judson Street and Delaware Avenue, committing several traffic violations. The pursuit ended when the car struck a median on Orange Street near Delaware Avenue.
The occupants fled on foot, and the driver—later identified as a 16-year-old boy—was tracked to the campus of Lugonia Elementary School with the help of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department helicopter, 40 King. He was taken into custody and booked into juvenile hall. The stolen vehicle was recovered and returned to its owner.
On Saturday morning, May 24, police responded to a traffic collision at South San Mateo Street and West Fern Avenue and arrested the driver after finding a loaded handgun concealed in a small bag in the vehicle. Officers also found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia on the driver. He was taken into custody. The investigation is ongoing.
Police are investigating an attempted residential burglary that occurred late Saturday night, May 22, in the 1700 block of Camellia Lane. The homeowner, who was away at the time, observed two masked and hooded suspects on his surveillance camera attempting to break in through a rear sliding glass door.
The suspects triggered the home’s alarm system and fled after the homeowner used the two-way audio system to scare them off. No entry was made and nothing was reported stolen.
Police also conducted a DUI checkpoint on Friday, May 23, on Citrus Avenue near Church Street. During the operation, one driver was arrested for driving under the influence, another was taken into custody on a DUI warrant, and two more were arrested—one for resisting an officer and the other for possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Officers cited four additional drivers for license violations, and one vehicle was impounded.
Redlands police encourage anyone with information about these incidents to call dispatch at (909) 798-7681, ext. 1. Non-emergency crimes can be reported online at www.cityofredlands.org/report-crime or through the City of Redlands 311 app.
