Police say suspect fired airsoft gun while shouting slur at home decorated for Hanukkah
REDLANDS, Calif. — A 23-year-old Redlands man has been arrested in connection with an antisemitic drive-by incident that targeted a Jewish family celebrating Hanukkah last month, police said.
Garrett Bailey Stater was arrested without incident Thursday, Jan. 8, at his apartment in the 1000 block of Pine Avenue, according to the Redlands Police Department. He was booked on charges of terrorizing and making terrorist threats.
The incident occurred the evening of Dec. 12 in the 1300 block of Magnolia Avenue, shortly after the family arrived home. Police said a vehicle drove past the residence, an occupant shouted an antisemitic slur and fired several shots toward the home. The family’s house and yard were prominently decorated for Hanukkah.
No injuries or property damage were reported.
Investigators found no shell casings at the scene, and home surveillance video showed no visible muzzle flash. Based on the evidence, police said they believed the weapon used was an airsoft handgun.
On Thursday morning, detectives served search warrants in Redlands and Yucaipa and recovered the airsoft gun believed to have been used in the incident, police said. Two other individuals were detained during the investigation and later released after questioning.
Police previously said they believe the family was targeted because of their religious decorations.
