Archivist Nathan Gonzales to spotlight rarely seen works and library history
REDLANDS, Calif. — The Redlands branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will host a special program on Saturday, June 7, exploring the fine art collection housed at A.K. Smiley Public Library.
The presentation, titled “Art Right Under Your Nose: Collected Treasures at the Smiley Library,” will be led by Nathan Gonzales, archivist and head of Special Collections at the library. It begins at 10 a.m. in the Casa Loma Room at the University of Redlands.
“While most people think of libraries as places of literature, many might not realize the treasure that Redlands has in Smiley Library’s collection of fine art, which was acquired over more than 130 years,” Gonzales said.
The public library’s extensive art collection includes pieces depicting the building itself, which are currently on display in the Assembly Room. Gonzales noted that future exhibitions are also in the works as the city prepares for the opening of the Museum of Redlands.
Gonzales has served the City of Redlands for 25 years and currently oversees the Lincoln Memorial Shrine and curatorial planning for the forthcoming museum. He also teaches in the University of Redlands History Department and serves as chair of the San Bernardino Community College District Board of Trustees.
AAUW Redlands branch meetings are free and open to the public. No reservations are required to attend the 10 a.m. presentation.
An optional brunch will be served at 9 a.m. for a $25 fee. To reserve a brunch seat, call 909-362-4955 or email AAUWrsvp@AAUWRedlands.org.
