Senior becomes first female wrestler in program history to sign with a Division I college.
REDLANDS, Calif. — Redlands East Valley High School senior Savannah “Vannah” Gutierrez signed her National Letter of Intent on Feb. 5 to wrestle at Utah Tech University, becoming the first female wrestler in the program’s history to advance to the collegiate level.
The milestone marks a first in the nine years head coach Bryan Holcombe has led the program and in his 13-year history with REV wrestling, including four years as an athlete.
“Today is about more than just stats and wins — it’s about a milestone,” Holcombe said. “Savannah is a trailblazer for every girl who will put on a REV singlet after her. She has proven that there is a clear path from our mats to the next level.”
Gutierrez joined the program three years ago and quickly made an impact, coaches said. Her path to a Division I opportunity in St. George, Utah, reflected the team’s motto, “Better Every Day,” a philosophy centered on steady improvement and work ethic.

While Gutierrez found early success, Holcombe said her consistency and determination set her apart.
“Savannah has been an inspiration to this coaching staff and to her teammates,” he said. “She has shown us that your starting point does not dictate your final destination; it is the heart you bring to the mat that matters. She is leaving a legacy at Redlands East Valley that will not be forgotten.”
The signing took place during National Girls and Women in Sports Week, underscoring her role in the growth of girls wrestling locally and statewide.
Gutierrez will join the Utah Tech Trailblazers this fall as part of the university’s women’s wrestling program.
