Free community event offers hands-on help to repair household items and reduce waste
REDLANDS, Calif. — Residents looking to repair broken household items instead of throwing them away can get free, hands-on help later this month at the ANCA Redlands Repair Cafe.
The community repair event, hosted by Accelerate Neighborhood Climate Action (ANCA), will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Flores Senior Center, 111 W. Lugonia Ave. Volunteers with repair skills will be on hand to help fix items, offer guidance on do-it-yourself repairs or advise whether an item can be repaired.
The Repair Cafe is free and open to the public and is designed to reduce waste, extend the life of everyday items and build community connections through shared problem-solving.
Repairable items may include lamps, small appliances, toys, jewelry, heirlooms, chairs, clothing, bicycles, home décor, picture frames and walkers.
Organizers note that leather bags and luggage cannot be repaired at the event.
Participants are encouraged to register their items by noon on the Thursday before the event. Registration helps volunteers prepare by bringing appropriate tools and supplies. Walk-ins will be accepted until 11 a.m., though priority will be given to those who register in advance.
If a repair requires replacement parts, volunteers can advise where to purchase them. Attendees who already know which parts are needed are encouraged to bring them to increase the chances of an on-the-spot repair.
