REDLANDS, Calif. — A Citrus Valley High School temporary special education teacher and longtime coach was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of sexually abusing a minor, according to school district officials and jail records.

Elvin Vereau, 52, was taken into custody May 13 by the Riverside Police Department and is currently being held at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside, according to Riverside County jail records.

Vereau, a temporary Special Academic Instruction (SAI) teacher at Citrus Valley High School, was placed on administrative leave immediately after the arrest, said district spokesperson Christine Stephens in a press release Tuesday evening.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Vereau has also served as a football and baseball coach at Citrus Valley since 2013, including roles as varsity defensive line coach, junior varsity defensive coordinator and JV head baseball coach.

He was first hired by the district in July 2013 as a paraprofessional, transitioned to a teaching role in 2022, and began his current assignment in the 2023–24 school year.

“Our top priority is, and always will be, the safety and well-being of our students,” Superintendent Juan Cabral said in a statement Tuesday evening. “Every employee must pass a series of background checks, including a Department of Justice check, prior to starting to work with our students. This process also includes the requirement for all employees to maintain good legal standing that is consistently monitored by our Human Resources department.”

The district is cooperating fully with law enforcement and said it will not share additional information at this time due to the ongoing investigation and privacy considerations.

“We appreciate the swift action taken by the Riverside Police Department and are committed to ensuring that any student who may have been affected receives the support and services they need,” Cabral said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Riverside Police Department.

Redlands Unified said it remains committed to transparency, accountability, and maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
