REDLANDS, Calif. — The city of Redlands is accepting applications to fill a vacancy on the A.K. Smiley Library Board of Trustees, a five-member governing body that oversees operations of the historic public library and its affiliated institutions.
Trustees are appointed by the mayor with City Council approval and serve three-year terms. The board meets at 5 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month and is responsible for creating and enforcing rules, regulations and bylaws for the administration and protection of the library.
Under state Education Code, public libraries must be governed by a board of trustees. In Redlands, the board also administers the A.K. Smiley Library Endowment Fund, established in 1922, which supports library programs, acquisitions and long-term stability.
Additional responsibilities include management of the Lincoln Memorial Shrine, affirmed by a 1932 City Council resolution tied to Robert Watchorn’s Deed of Gift, and the Redlands Municipal Museum, which the board was directed to administer in 2001.
Applications are due Dec. 16. Residents may request forms from the City Clerk’s Office, 35 Cajon St., Suite 4, or download them at the city’s website: www.cityofredlands.org/commissions-boards.
