REDLANDS, Calif. — The Redlands Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint from 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, until 1 a.m. the next day at an undisclosed location, the agency announced.
Checkpoint sites are chosen using crash data where impaired driving has been a factor. Officials said the goal is to keep suspected impaired drivers off the road and improve safety.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Redlands Police Traffic Sgt. Martin Gonzalez said in a statement. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
Police reminded the public that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana — though legal for medical and recreational use — can still impair driving.
A first-time DUI conviction can cost about $13,500 in fines and penalties and result in a suspended license.
The program is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
