REDLANDS, Calif. — The Redlands Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday, Sept. 25, at an undisclosed location in the city.
Police said the checkpoint location will be selected based on data showing where impaired-driving crashes have occurred.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sgt. Jeffrey Frisch, who supervises the department’s Traffic Division, said in a statement. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
Police reminded drivers that impairment can be caused by substances other than alcohol, including some prescription and over-the-counter medications. Although recreational and medicinal marijuana are legal in California, driving while impaired by marijuana remains illegal.
According to the department, drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.
The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
