Checkpoint aims to remove impaired drivers from roads and raise awareness about DUI risks and penalties
REDLANDS, Calif. — The Redlands Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint from 6 p.m. Friday, May 23, through 1 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location within city limits, officials announced this week.
Checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing a high frequency of crashes involving impaired drivers. The goal, police say, is to deter dangerous driving and improve road safety by identifying and removing those under the influence.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” said Redlands Police Cpl. Martin Gonzalez. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
Officials emphasized that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and cannabis—while legal for medicinal and recreational use—can all affect a person’s ability to drive safely.
A first-time DUI conviction can result in approximately $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license, police said.
The operation is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
