December is one of the most dangerous months on U.S. roads.
REDLANDS, Calif. — The Redlands Police Department will deploy extra patrol officers Dec. 12 as part of a nationwide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign aimed at reducing impaired-driving crashes during the holiday season.
In a press release Dec. 9, police encourage residents to celebrate the holiday season responsibly. December is one of the most dangerous months on U.S. roads. In December 2023, 1,038 people were killed in alcohol-impaired crashes nationwide, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“We want to make sure everyone gets home safely so that they can celebrate the holiday season with their families and loved ones,” Traffic Unit Sgt. Martin Gonzalez said. “Not only is driving impaired illegal, but it is also dangerous and never acceptable.”
The department urged residents to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, using public transit, or scheduling a taxi or rideshare if they intend to drink. Officials also noted that impairment is not limited to alcohol — prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products and other substances can also affect driving ability.
Police ask that anyone who sees a driver suspected of being impaired call 911.
The enforcement effort is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
