REDLANDS, Calif. — Redlands police are investigating a series of recent incidents, including the fraudulent purchase of a new truck, a high-speed pursuit involving stolen Kias, a scam that cost a senior citizen $18,000, and a campus utility vehicle found abandoned in a neighborhood.

$18,000 scam involving fake Apple support

An 82-year-old man was reportedly scammed out of $18,000 after receiving a text message on July 3 claiming his Apple account had been suspended. The victim called the number provided and later met two men behind a church, where he handed over $15,000 in cash and $3,000 in Apple gift cards, police said. The suspects fled in a gray 2008 Honda Fit. The man contacted police on July 5 after realizing the scam. The investigation is ongoing.

Truck purchased with fake ID recovered

A suspect used a false ID to purchase a new truck from Hatfield Buick, police said. The dealership later tracked the vehicle using its onboard GPS to a location on Mountain View Avenue. Officers found the truck unoccupied on Wednesday, July 9, and returned it to the dealership in its original condition. The case remains under investigation.

Two stolen Kias lead to high-speed pursuit

Shortly after 2 a.m. Monday, July 7, police responded to a report of an auto theft in progress on Ohio Street. The vehicle owner watched suspects steal her Kia on home surveillance. Officers spotted the stolen vehicle merging onto the northbound 210 freeway alongside another Kia.

Both vehicles fled with no headlights on. One exited at Del Rosa Avenue and was later recovered in San Bernardino with the help of a GPS locator. That vehicle had previously been reported stolen. The second Kia escaped after exiting at H Street, according to police.

Campus golf cart found in neighborhood

On Saturday, July 5, the principal of Citrus Valley High School contacted police after recognizing the school’s utility golf cart in a photo shared on the Ring neighborhood app. The cart had been stored in a locked electrical room on campus and was found abandoned in the 1700 block of Camellia Lane. There was no sign of forced entry, and no other campus buildings appeared to have been tampered with. The incident is under investigation.

Motorcyclist injured in unreported crash

On Sunday evening, July 6, police were notified by hospital staff after a motorcycle rider arrived with moderate to severe injuries. The rider said he had been involved in a collision with another vehicle at San Bernardino Avenue and Dearborn Street. The crash was not reported to police at the time, and the involved parties had cleaned up the scene. Officers were unable to locate physical evidence of the collision.

Police responded to a single-vehicle crash at the west end of Lugonia Avenue on Monday, July 7. A driver traveling at high speed struck the curb, hit multiple boulders, and launched his vehicle into a fence near the Metrolink tracks. The driver suffered only minor injuries.
