REDLANDS, Calif. — Redlands police arrested a man carrying an airsoft rifle with its safety markings removed and cited multiple dirt bike riders in separate incidents last week, according to the department’s weekly update.

Replica rifle incident

On Saturday morning, Sept. 6, officers responded to reports of a man walking with an assault-style rifle concealed in his pants near Stuart Avenue and Orange Street. Police located him a short time later at Redlands Boulevard and 5th Street.

Officers said the man ignored commands and continued to walk away before a brief struggle, during which he repeatedly reached toward his waistband. He was detained after police recovered a box cutter that had fallen from his pants and found an airsoft rifle hidden in nearby bushes. Police said the gun’s orange safety tip had been painted black to resemble a real firearm.

The man was arrested on suspicion of obstructing and resisting an officer and brandishing a replica firearm.

Reckless dirt bike riders cited

Later that afternoon, officers received multiple calls about dirt bike and e-bike riders blocking traffic, running red lights and stop signs, and weaving through traffic while heading southbound on Orange Street from Pioneer Avenue.

Police stopped one rider who lacked a proper license, registration and insurance. His motorbike was impounded and he was cited. Another juvenile on an unregistered motorbike was also stopped. Officers said he was unlicensed and uninsured. He was arrested, his bike impounded and later released to his mother.

One caller told police the group of riders boxed in her car on Orange Street and intentionally sideswiped her vehicle, causing damage. She was unable to provide further details.

Redlands police said they are aware of safety and traffic issues caused by motorized bikes and urged residents to report reckless riding immediately to police dispatch.
