REDLANDS, Calif. — A 38-year-old Redlands man was arrested Friday night on suspicion of domestic violence, arson and animal cruelty after authorities say he assaulted his girlfriend and set fire to their home, killing four pets.

Redlands police arrested Ryan Winston Stewart on Dec. 19 after a fire broke out at a single-story residence in the 800 block of Occidental Drive. He is being held at the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino in lieu of $80,000 bail.

According to a news release from the Redlands Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to the home at about 8 p.m. and found a well-established fire in the living room area near the front of the residence. Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, preventing it from spreading further, and brought the fire under control within approximately 15 minutes.

The victim escaped the home before firefighters arrived, and no injuries were reported among the occupants or responding firefighters. Three cats and one dog were found dead inside the home.

Stewart fled the scene down an alley before being apprehended by police and taken into custody, authorities said.

A video shared by the Redlands Fire Department on Instagram shows firefighters advancing hose lines and knocking down heavy flames at the front of the residence as crews worked to contain the fire.

Firefighters remained on scene for about two hours to conduct overhaul operations. Mutual aid was provided by the San Bernardino County Fire Department and the Loma Linda Fire Department.

The American Red Cross responded to assist the victim with emergency shelter and support services.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
