Much has been written about Redlands High’s 1961 football team, the only Terrier squad to win a CIF-Southern Section football title.

Less celebrated is the 1979 Terrier team that went 11-3 overall, defeated three Catholic powers in the playoffs, but was crushed 55-0 by Edison of Huntington Beach in the section title game before 20,254 at Anaheim Stadium.

The Redlands team will hold a reunion on Saturday at the home of its quarterback, Pat Hafley.

“It was memorable in a few ways,” Hafley said of the season. “It was a special run. We had local guys. It was a one-high school town, and we had one dream.”

The Terriers defeated Mater Dei of Santa Ana 3-0, Loyola of Los Angeles17-13, and St. Francis of La Canada 15-0 in the playoffs before the mistake-filled loss to Edison.

I will attend the event and will have more on this superb Terrier team soon.
