City reminds residents that all personal fireworks are illegal, with fines up to $1,000 for violations
REDLANDS, Calif. — The city of Redlands will celebrate Independence Day with a full slate of activities on Thursday, July 4, beginning with live entertainment and a morning parade at Sylvan Park and ending with a fireworks spectacular at Moore Middle School.
Festivities kick off at 9 a.m. in Sylvan Park, with performances throughout the day and the annual Fourth of July Parade set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
Evening events move to Moore Middle School, where gates open at 5:15 p.m. and live entertainment starts at 6 p.m.
The fireworks show is scheduled for approximately 9 p.m.
Tickets for the fireworks show are $12 in advance or $15 at the gate. Children under 3 are free. Tickets can be purchased at the Redlands City Clerk’s Office, 35 Cajon St., Suite 4, Gerrards Market at 705 W. Cypress Ave., or online at redlandsfourthofjuly.com.
As part of the celebration, city officials are urging residents to leave the fireworks to the professionals. All fireworks — including so-called “safe and sane” types — are illegal in Redlands, with fines of up to $1,000 per violation.
An updated city ordinance also holds property owners, tenants and guardians responsible for any fireworks used on their property or by minors in their care. Violators may also be on the hook for the cost of public safety responses, including personnel time, medical care, damaged equipment and fireworks disposal.
Nationwide, fireworks cause more than 16,000 fires and nearly 9,000 emergency room visits each year, according to fire officials. Property losses total an estimated $15 million to $20 million annually.
Residents can report illegal fireworks by submitting a tip online at arcg.is/159jvS0 or by calling Redlands Police Dispatch at (909) 798-7681, ext. 1. Reports may be made anonymously, but specific addresses and details are helpful. Officials ask that 911 only be used for emergencies.
