Redlands grinded out another 3 points to maintain second place in the standings
Redlands FC began the back half of their season Wednesday night in Whittier as they took on the Southern California Eagles. With Redlands sitting in 2nd place in the USL2 Southwest Division standings, and the first place Fusion winning earlier in the day, it was a must have 3 points.
The first half of the match was the highest scoring half Redlands has been involved in during USL2 play this summer. In the first 40 minutes, four total goals were scored. Two came from Redlands thanks to Jose de la Torre in the 11th minute and Efren Nunez in the 28th.
The Eagles got two of their own, including a goal off a corner kick in the final minutes of the first half. That sent both teams to the locker room all even.
Redlands came out in the second half and simply looked like the better side. It paid off just after the hour mark when a takedown in the box gave Redlands FC a penalty kick. Kevin Meza stepped up and buried it into the top right corner, giving Redlands the lead.
Redlands has been stellar all year long when it comes to keeping second half leads, and they did that again following the Meza goal. The Eagles best chance came on a free kick that rolled dangerously into the box, but no finishing touch could be found.
After a few more minutes of defending during stoppage time, the final whistle blew. Redlands had earned win number 4 of the season and remained in second in the division.
The victory extends Redlands unbeaten streak to six games and what will be nearly a month's worth of time when they play their next match. That one will be a rematch against the Eagles.
Kickoff is set for June 20th at 7 PM inside Dodge Stadium, with the game also being streamed live on Sports Engine Play.
