Redlands East Valley football christens stadium, gives Rough Riders the boot

Redlands East Valley celebrates its long-awaited on-campus stadium with a 63-7 rout, a packed crowd, and plenty of school pride.

The Redlands East Valley High football team was amped.

The Wildcats, from the moment they burst through their inflatable tunnel to when they skipped off the field with a 63-7 victory, felt the vibe.

Friday night was the much-awaited REV football stadium grand opening, and it was a boffo success on and off the field.

The victim was the California Military Institute of Perris – the Rough Riders hung in there for a while but eventually faded.

“It was exciting,” REV offensive lineman Landon Mlotkowski said following the rout.

“There were so many people here. I loved the energy. It felt great.”

Mlotkowski, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound mauler, said his parents were in the home stands, where seemingly everyone rocked red.

Said another REV offensive lineman, Robert Morris, “It was amazing to feel the energy. I could feel the adrenaline.”

REV was the only comprehensive public high school in Redlands that did not play its home games on campus as late as 2023. The venue had one side of bleachers installed in ’23 and played an array of sports.

REV opened the 2024 season against Vista del Lago of Moreno Valley. Spirits soared as REV took a big lead. But the visiting Ravens rebounded and edged the Wildcats.

Friday night there was no comeback.

The Wildcats sped to a 51-0 halftime lead. That margin ballooned despite the use of a running clock in the second half and with the Wildcats substituting liberally.

Sophomore Myles Kirkland dazzled by making touchdown catches of 54 and 10 yards early for a 14-0 lead.

There were penalties called on both teams, yeah, but that is not unusual for the first game of the season.

“I think maybe the refs are calling it a little tight,” said Redlands resident Gary Billings, whose 30-something daughters Sabrina and Wendy attended REV.

Billings has attended REV football games since 2003, including all the 2014 games when the Wildcats rallied to beat Clayton Valley Charter of Concord 34-33 for the CIF State Division II title. A fumble recovery by current NFL player Jaelan Phillips with 4:12 left in the game preserved REV’s victory.

Back to 2025. A 1-yard run by Isaac Vitela put REV ahead three scores by the second quarter.

Vitela finished with 289 yards passing and five scores. Three of those passes went to Kirkland. “We have a lot of players out (for the team) and an experienced coaching staff,” Kirkland said.

Not in the REV lineup was senior Nathen Lopez, a former star Wildcat running back who has stepped away from football to focus on baseball.

“Nathen is a great kid, and he’s earned that right to play baseball if he wants to,” REV athletic director Chad Blatchley said.

Blatchley and Doug McCasey – the district athletic director for Redlands Unified – beamed from the end zone area. Other major contributors to the project were former REV athletic director Rhonda Fouch, former Redlands High AD Ken Morse, and ex-district AD Pat Hafley.

Vitela led the REV offense with 289 yards passing and five touchdowns. Nathaniel Williams III latched onto three passes for 101 yards and two scores.

Sophomore Kirkland caught five passes for 163 yards and three TDs. Michael Berto bagged an interception.

REV running backs Hunter Goettel and Lance Brown combined for eight carries and 131 yards and a TD.

Jesus Lorenzo returned an interception for a TD.

Mlotkowski said he had four pancake blocks. Nobody argued.

“It was fantastic,” said Fouch, the REV athletic director of 25 years who is now retired. “I remember when REV was playing at the University of Redlands and Redlands High and Citrus Valley and now look at us today. And how beautiful is this stadium?”

Fouch said the venue is not complete, with Phase 3 to include amenities such as team rooms, a snack bar, etc.

Alumni showed out, including former pro Chris Polk, who was named a SuperPrep All-American in 2008.

But mostly, it was about the current Wildcats soaring.

“I’m excited for the kids,” REV coach Kristian King said. “They’ve worked hard. But now it’s onto next week and it’s just like we’re 0-0.”
