REDLANDS, Calif. — The annual “Day of Climate Action” is returning to Redlands on Saturday, April 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event features hands-on workshops, volunteer projects and a community celebration.
Presented by the City of Redlands, Accelerate Neighborhood Climate Action and a coalition of local organizations and businesses, the event will bring residents together to learn practical ways to live more sustainably while participating in environmental projects across the city.
Morning activities from 9 a.m. to noon will include both educational workshops and volunteer opportunities, many centered around three main hubs:
Residents can volunteer to help build a community and native plant garden at the Boys & Girls Club, remove invasive species at Caroline Park or construct water-saving berms at the Burrage Mansion orchards.
Workshop offerings include sustainable gardening, vermicomposting and food fermentation at the Asistencia; solar energy, water conservation and non-toxic household products at the Burrage Mansion; and composting, smart irrigation, tree planting and medicinal plants at SURF.
Additional activities will take place throughout the city. A Repair Café at the Joslyn Senior Center, 21 Grant St., will offer free household item repairs by volunteers. The Redlands Conservancy will host a family-oriented nature program at Gateway Ranch, 31313 Live Oak Canyon Road. Three Sisters Farm, 30370 San Timoteo Canyon Road, will offer tours focused on climate-resilient agriculture.
The event will culminate with a community celebration at noon in Smiley Park, behind A.K. Smiley Public Library, featuring live music by Pickle and Bean, informational booths, children’s activities, food trucks and an electric vehicle showcase.
Organizers have also expanded the event into “Earth Week,” with additional programming leading up to April 18. Events include:
The event is organized by the city of Redlands, Accelerate Neighborhood Climate Action and several regional partners, including the Inland Empire Resource Conservation District, San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District, San Bernardino Valley Water Conservation District and Do Better Tech.
The Day of Climate action began in 2023. Last year - despite the rainy weather - hundreds of residents rolled up their sleeves to help planting trees, learn to compost, repair clothing, and sharing a vision for a greener future.
