BEAUMONT – Many athletes from Redlands schools excelled at the Citrus Belt League track and field finals on Thursday night at Beaumont High.

Redlands High’s Su’Riah Williams won the girls’ discus with a heave of 150 feet. That just missed the meet record of Redlands’ Celeste McVey (151-3) set in 1991.

Williams also won the shot put with an effort of 39-8 ½.

“It’s pretty great,” Williams said. “I still feel like there’s work to be done, but I’m pretty proud of it. I’d like to win CIF (the CIF-Southern Section meet).”

Redlands East Valley’s Meghan Walker won the 1,600 meters in 5:20.10.

“I felt great. I was pretty relaxed,” Walker said. ‘‘It was a pretty fun race. I was just trying to chill and enjoy the meet. I felt really relaxed going in.”

Walker will attend Colorado College in the fall but will not run.

Citrus Valley’s Mia Gonzalez nabbed the 100 hurdles in 15.46, with her teammate Olivia Elgan taking second in 16.03.

“I’m real excited. It’s a new (personal record),” Gonzalez said. “I was pretty nervous going in.”

Said Elgan, “I feel good. I was pretty relaxed.”

Elgan will attend Cal State Fullerton and will cheerlead. She was also a cheerleader at Citrus Valley.

Redlands’ Sadie Herford took the 300 hurdles in 47.02. Herford also took a second place in the long jump in 16-6.

REV’s Katie Hornung captured the 3,200 in 11:38.85.

On the boys’ side, REV’s Noah Esquibel ran a personal best of 10.81 to win the 100. Esquivel also took a second in the 200 (22.13).

“I felt really good about getting a (personal record) heading into CIF,” Esquibel said. “I jogged during prelims (on Thursday) so I felt confident heading into finals because everyone else was going hard in prelims. Hopefully I can get under 10.7 or 10.6.”

Multi-sport Redlands High star Julien Scarbrough won the long jump in 23-7. He will play football in the fall at the University of Redlands, as well as competing in track and field.

“I feel good – I’ve been struggling a little bit all year so to be able to jump that well in the biggest meet of the year so far, I’m proud of it,” Scarbrough said.

There was a notable effort by a Cajon High of San Bernardino athlete in the triple jump. The Cowboys’ Keith Cotlage set a meet record with an effort of 50-7. That surpassed the record of JR McCoy of Rubidoux (48-0 ½) set in 1989.

Redlands’ Kasen Gragg won the high jump (6-0).

Yucaipa’s Benjamin Lingenfelter excelled in the weight events. Lingenfelter won the shot put (54-7 ½) and the discus (177-11).
