Police activity near Redlands High prompts helicopter response; no threat to students

REDLANDS, Calif. — Police activity near Redlands High School prompted a law enforcement helicopter to circle the campus Tuesday morning, but authorities said neither of two unrelated incidents posed a threat to students.

Before the start of school Sept. 15, a Redlands Police Department school resource officer stopped an electric scooter rider near the campus after the rider allegedly ran a red light and was observed using marijuana while operating the scooter, according to RPD.

Police said the individual, who was not associated with the school and did not enter campus, fled on foot after the officer made contact.

A San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department helicopter responded to assist with the search and made several passes near the school. The individual was not located.

Around the same time, police encountered an adult man near the tennis courts on campus in an unrelated incident and directed him to leave the area. Another RPD officer later contacted the man and detained him on drug charges, police said.

No students were involved in either incident, and police said there was no determination of a threat to students.

Redlands High School Principal Wes Cullen told families shortly after 9 a.m. that RPD had not recommended placing the campus in Safe and Secure Mode or lockdown.

"At no point during this event were the students at RHS in any danger," Cullen said.

Cullen said the school's resource officer remained in contact with the campus safety team throughout the incident while administrators assisted with students arriving at school.
