National Walk and Roll to School Day returns Oct. 8
Redlands Police remind drives to stay alert and slow down in school zones

REDLANDS, Calif. — The Redlands Police Department is encouraging families and students to lace up their sneakers and buckle on helmets for National Walk and Roll to School Day, taking place Tuesday, Oct. 8.
Why it matters: Encouraging safe walking and biking routes supports Redlands’ goals for healthier, more connected neighborhoods and reduces traffic congestion around schools.
Keep an eye out: Police urge drivers to use extra caution that morning, when foot and bicycle traffic will be higher than usual near schools. Motorists are reminded to slow down in school zones, be prepared to stop for children in crosswalks and buses, and stay alert at all times.
What they're saying: “National Walk and Roll to School Day is a great opportunity to highlight pedestrian safety and advocate for safer routes for walking and biking to school,” said Redlands Police Traffic Unit Sgt. Martin Gonzalez. “This day underscores the importance of boosting physical activity and prioritizes the safety of the families in our community.”
The department also shared several safety reminders for students who walk, bike or roll to school:
- Choose routes with sidewalks or paths whenever possible.
- Use crosswalks and always look left-right-left before crossing.
- Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the street.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing and helmets when riding or skating.
- Stay alert and avoid distractions from electronic devices.
Schools can register their participation at walkbiketoschool.org, helping to track community involvement and show support for active, healthy, and safe transportation.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
