The University of Redlands has announced its 2025 Bulldog Bench Hall of Fame class.
The inductees are longtime former athletic director and Redlands resident Jeff Martinez, women’s track and field athlete Ali Smith (Class of 2017), men’s soccer player Ross Schunk (2009), men’s swimmer Weldon Diggs (1965), women’s basketball player Courtney Carroll (2012), men’s golfer Trevor Young (2006), men’s basketball player Tristan Kirk (2013), and the 2011 men’s track and field team.
Martinez, during his 42-year career at the university, served as a head athletic trainer, women’s golf coach, and athletic director. He shaped the modern era of Bulldog athletics.
Kirk is a Redlands High graduate and three-time University of Redlands all-conference player. He was named the Bulldogs’ 2012-2013 Frank Serrao Senior Male Athlete of the Year and is now an associate attorney in Los Angeles.
“I’m very excited and honored to have been selected for the University of Redlands Hall of Fame,” Kirk said. “It was certainly unexpected.”
The HOF class will be celebrated during homecoming at a dinner and induction ceremony on Friday, Oct. 17.
The Honolulu Little League baseball team of Hawaii won the West Region title in San Bernardino last week to advance.
Hawaii defeated Fullerton’s Golden Hill LL of Southern California 4-1 in the title game on Thursday at Al Houghton Stadium. The victory sends Hawaii to the Little League World Series for ages 10-12 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Hawaii’s first game is noon Friday against an opponent to be determined. All games are televised on ESPN.
Junior quarterback Cole Fornelli has transferred from Arrowhead Christian Academy to Ontario Christian.
Fornelli threw for 1,442 yards and 21 touchdowns with four interceptions last season. Josh Rice is now QB1 at ACA. Rice has not played football in a few years but decided to join his friends on the team.
Another new face at Ontario Christian is football coach Lonyae Miller. The former Kaiser High star running back and NFL player was hired in June.
Former Redlands East Valley High softball star Sahvanna Jaquish continues to excel. Jaquish on Wednesday will play for the U.S. Women’s National Team in the World Games in Chengdu, China.
Jaquish, a catcher, played for the U.S. in the World Games in 2024, nabbing a silver medal.
Jaquish was a two-time Citrus Belt League most valuable softball player in 2012 and 2013, hitting .548 as a senior with 11 home and runs and 48 runs batted in.
In addition to playing for the U.S. women’s national team, Jaquish plays for the Talons of the Athletes Unlimited Softball League.
The Redlands High girls volleyball team held its media day last Tuesday in the Terrier gym. Mostly it was a photo-taking exercise, but I did chat with some of the girls.
“I’m excited about the season and I hope we can win CBL again,” junior Gianna Corona said. “I’m excited about some of the new girls we have, and I think we can go pretty far this year.”
The Terriers opened their season Saturday in the Lakewood Tournament, sweeping Santa Fe of Whittier and Marlborough of Los Angeles. Their home opener is 5:30 p.m. Wednesday against Paloma Valley.
Arrowhead Christian excelled on Saturday at the Blackhawks Classic at Citrus Valley. The Eagles defeated King of Riverside, Serrano of Phelan, and Cajon in pool play before losing to eventual tournament champion Xavier Prep of Palm Desert in the tourney semifinal.
ACA hosts Palm Desert at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Yucaipa High’s Butch Price recently bagged a huge award.
He was named one of the top assistant football coaches in the nation by the Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation. The honor goes to the top assistant high school football coaches in each state.
Price assists his son Justin with the Thunderbirds.
“Congratulations to my father for earning the award,” said Justin Price via social media. “Everyone in Yuc Town is proud of you.”
Butch, 76, has rebounded nicely from a 12-hour heart surgery in 2022.
University of Redlands football is hosting its first Bulldog Football Alumni, Family, and Friends Day. It is Saturday, August 23 and promises “a memorable day of camaraderie, celebration, and Bulldog pride.”
Included is a Bulldog family tailgate 4:30 to 7 p.m., football practice 4:30 to 7 p.m., a fitness center and field house tour at 5:30 p.m., and an “inside the huddle program” 7-8 p.m.
The Bulldogs’ opener is September 6 against visiting George Fox University of Newberg, Oregon.
The Citrus Valley High football team does not open its season until August 29 against visiting Etiwanda. But the Blackhawks have a scrimmage August 22 at 6 p.m. against visiting Rowland of Rowland Heights. The junior varsity scrimmages at 4 p.m.
Arrowhead Christian scrimmages at Banning at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The Redlands High flag football team began its season on a positive note. The Terriers won two of three games in their own Terrier Touchdown Classic on Saturday, defeating Xavier Prep 19-12 and Indian Springs 34-6.
