Shane Smith’s crew officiated the recent Citrus Valley vs. Etiwanda High football game.

Whenever we see Smith, an East Highland resident, we are reminded of 2001 when the late Richard Smith and his four sons (Shane is one of them) officiated a CIF Southern Section quarterfinal football game between Laguna Hills and El Modena. Laguna Hills won in overtime.

The crew for that playoff game was referee Richard Smith, umpire Steve Smith, linesman Shane Smith, line judge Scott Smith, and back judge Stanford (Stan) Smith.

Richard was 65 at the time.

The only other time so many family members officiated together was Nov. 13, 1993, when the same group worked a game between winless Rialto and 10-0 A.B. Miller of Fontana. Ironically, Rialto won.

As for the Orange County game, Richard – then a Redlands resident – picked up all his boys in his black Cadillac Escalade one by one and the Smiths car-pooled to the game in style.

“Before the game my dad announced, “I’m Richard Smith and this is Mr. Smith and Mr. Smith and Mr. Smith and Mr. Smith," Shane said with a laugh. Scott Smith became a successful boys basketball coach at Pacific and Arroyo Valley high schools. He now runs the physical education department for San Bernardino City Unified.

FOND MEMORIES

Shane Smith is an encyclopedia of area sports knowledge and has countless anecdotes such as one involving former San Bernardino High star athlete Willie Beamon.

“Willie was playing catcher on the baseball team and a guy makes the last out when it’s announced the 800 run is coming  up at the (nearby) track meet,” Shane said. “Willie jumps over a fence and wins the 800 then he jumps back over the fence again and gets up to bat and hits a home run. It was unbelievable.”

BULLDOGS WIN

The University of Redlands football team edged George Fox University of Newberg, Oregon 10-7 on Saturday night at Ted Runner Stadium in the season opener for both teams.

Taylor Bowie got the Bulldogs going with 1:33 left in the first quarter, ripping off a 76-yard TD run. Redlands led 7-0.

The Bulldogs pushed their lead to 10 points when Aidan Petruescu made a 24-yard field goal with 39 seconds left in the half.

George Fox crept close with a Karsen Denault 38-yard TD catch from Kaelan Frey with 2:39 left in the game.

Redlands outgained Fox 282-273. The Bulldogs outrushed the Bruins 192-114, led by Bowie.

LOYAL

Colton High junior quarterback Koa Regalado is one of the best in the section and he proved it Thursday night in a 48-7 victory against Arrowhead Christian (0-3).

Regalado completed 7 of 10 passes for 227 yards and four touchdowns. Dominic Torrez caught three of those passes for 142 yards.

Regalado has repeatedly said he will not leave the Inland Empire school for a superpower like Mater Dei of Santa Ana nor St. John Bosco of Bellflower, nor any other powerful out-of-area school.

In other non-league football games played last week, Grand Terrace defeated Redlands 21-19, Cajon downed Etiwanda 34-17, La Quinta turned back Citrus Valley 36-20, Yucaipa pummeled Shadow Hills of Indio 45-20, and Riverside Poly edged Redlands East Valley 20-14.

WELLS RETURNS TO MOUND, GETS WIN

Yucaipa High graduate Tyler Wells, with his wife Melissa and new daughter in the stands, won a big game last week for the Baltimore Orioles.

Wells and Melissa married in January of 2024. Three months later, Wells was injured and required season-ending surgery. A few months after that, Wells and his wife learned they were pregnant with their first child.

The rehab process was not easy.

“It was a lot of learning, a lot of adapting, a lot of growing,” Wells told the Baltimore Sun of his recovery. “It’s going to make me a better player, a better teammate and a better pitcher, but most importantly, a better husband and dad.”

Last Tuesday Wells made his first appearance in more than 500 days, pitching five innings and allowing two runs to help his team to victory against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

Redlands is the three-time defending champ. The Terriers swept Hillcrest of Riverside on Wednesday. Kameryn Carpenter led the Terriers with nine kills, Gia Johnson had five kills and Jocelyn McNairy, Jaydee Zook and Charlee Willis had four kills apiece.

Arrowhead Christian is off to a hot start at 10-3. The Eagles swept Arroyo Valley, Loma Linda Academy, and Indian Springs last week.

REDLANDS REMAINS UNBEATEN

Redlands next plays in the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational where it will meet Linfield University and UC-Santa Cruz on Friday at 4 and 7 p.m., respectively.
