A 13-year-old area boys basketball team excelled in a recent Nevada tournament.
Inland Empire United, in the Breakthrough Nationals in Las Vegas, battled through squads from Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Texas to make the championship game.
IE United rallied to edge a squad from Seattle in the title game. The locals lost to the same team in pool play on a 3-point buzzer beater.
“We worked very hard all year,” coach Shaun Baker said. “Last year we went 0-4 as a 12-and-under team. We moved up to 13-14U and pushed them each week to be better.”
IE United was led by Jacob Shorters, the son of former UC-Riverside great Jimmy Shorters. Also starring was Ethan Bridgeland, the son of University of Redlands men’s basketball coach Eric Bridgeland. Ethan is a deadeye outside shooter and a staunch defender.
Other IE United standouts are point guard Aidan Retana, wing David Hernandez, shutdown defender Ryan Regalado, and shooting guard Mayson Hensley.
