Only two Citrus Belt League tackle football teams remain unbeaten in league, and one of them is Redlands East Valley High. The chances of that a year ago when REV went 1-9 were remote.

But former REV player and new Wildcat coach Kristian King has been a shot of adrenaline for the program. The Wildcats (5-2 overall, 2-0 CBL) are riding high after defeating Citrus Valley 14-3 two weeks ago and pummeling Redlands High 69-28 in Friday night’s Smudge Pot Game at Dodge Field.

The last time REV won five or more games in a season was 2018. Since then the Wildcats were 8-47 entering 2025.

REV was confident heading into the contest, as displayed by King distributing “City Champ” T-shirts to his players immediately after the game.

Asked Friday night when he knew his team was dominant, REV offensive lineman Tyler Huston said, “Since way before tonight. We knew we were going to come out and dominate. We had a good performance against Citrus (Valley) and that was a big confidence boost for tonight.”

Describing the difference between this year and recent years, Huston said, “Our new coach and our staff have given us a new mindset, and we just want to play harder.”

REV senior quarterback Isaac Vitela also said King has made a difference.

“He's brought a lot,” Vitela said. “He’s brought energy and coaching. He wants the best for us, and he makes sure we strive for that.”

As King handed out T-shirts, he described how he transformed the Wildcats.

“We brought back the culture,” King said. “Being a REV product and a REV graduate, it was important to bring back tradition. We wanted to re-establish that but also start something new so that the kids could make it their own. We want them to understand how great of a place REV is and how historical REV football is.”

The Wildcats won 11 league titles and a state Division II championship under former Wildcat coach Kurt Bruich who is now the coach at Citrus Valley.

Now, that whiff of magic is again in the Mentone air.

“I’ve gotten a lot of good feedback,” King said. “It’s cool to see people rally around REV football again. That’s something I’m really proud of, to get these boys the shine they deserve. They’ve been through some tough times so it’s good to see them celebrating and happy.”

Beaumont was the pre-season favorite to win the CBL football title, and it still may nab that championship. But for now, Cajon and REV share first place with 2-0 records.
